Beardow Adams: First time at ICE to aid
push into Europe

Beardow Adams, a UK’ producer of hot melt adhesives, is exhibiting at ICE Europe for the first time. It is launching three new hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs) under its Pressen brand to compliment its existing products for coating on to flexible substrates in the manufacture of self-adhesive materials, including tapes, labels, graphic arts and security bag applications, and heat-reactivatable coatings.

The latest products are Pressen 1968, a self-adhesive tape formulation with high adhesion to difficult surfaces; Pressen 2007, a self-adhesive label formulation giving low staining at high temperatures; and Pressen 2024, a self-adhesive label formulation giving easy-peel label stock.

“Sales of our hot melt adhesives for converting applications have grown substantially in the UK in the last two years,” says Graeme Nutting, Beardow Adams’ Sales Director for North West Europe. “We have proven products that are in regular use – and with mainland Europe being an important converting market, ICE Europe is ideal for our drive to share our experience and increase sales.”

Beardow Adams is one of the top hot melt manufacturers in Europe. From its Milton Keynes headquarters, it supplies hot melts to over 50 major industrialised countries.

Alpha’s new versatile spooler
for ICE '09

On its stand at ICE Europe 2009, Alpha Converting is exhibiting the latest version of its AlphaSpool RSM – an off-line spooler that can run roll to spool, spool to spool, or spool to roll, providing complete flexibility in one compact machine.

The AlphaSpool range of traverse spoolers has been continually developed to satisfy both off-line and in-line applications, with the RSM able to wind polyester film to pressure sensitive foam and also spool in a variety of patterns on paper cores or customer spools. It can be equipped with accessories for winding products from 0.5 mm wide up to 40 mm wide.

Alpha Converting design and manufacture a wide range of converting equipment – its core business is slitting and rewinding, centred on the AlphaTwin range of shafted centre winders. These machines range from the AlphaLab Twin at 500 mm web width and 500 mm rewind diameter to the AlphaTwin HR at 2,000 mm web width and 1,000 mm rewind diameter – this unit can be supplied complete with powered unloading trolleys and crane operated unloading systems.

Delpro Ltd shows impoved ECOFLEX
Doctor Blade

At ICE Europe 2009 Delpro, a specialist in coaters, laminators, dryers, conditioners, reel stands and flexo printers, shows its improved ECOFLEX Chamber Doctor Blade. Delpro’s Carbon Fibre Chamber Doctor Blade was the world's first and allows cleaner, cheaper and faster running. Press or gravure coater performance is now improved ensuring higher quality printing and coating, reducing wastage, and producing a safer working environment.

Delpro’s innovative approach to product development is demonstrated by an improved gap setting mechanism for coaters and laminators. Unlike most other systems, this allows fine adjustment to be made, backlash free and under full load. The result is a quick and repeatable operation with a resolution of 1 micron.

New: Non-contact length measurement
by ELOVIS

At ICE Europe 2009 ELOVIS GmbH will present its new length and speed measurement system. With the newest generation of µSPEED systems, ELOVIS will present features for easier handling and highly economic production, offering an alternative for material producers and machine builders.

For more than 10 years the high level µSPEED sensors have been used for applications with high precision requirements (measurement uncertainty of less than 0,05 %) in many industrial sectors (e.g. paper, laminates, film and foil, textiles and non-woven). To complete the product range, ELOVIS now offers measurement systems for applications with lower requirements.

Due to its high measurement stability, regardless of material, colour or reflection, the ELOVIS sensor system offers a wide range of applications for the coating and converting industry, such as length checking for incoming goods, speed control for laminating different materials, detection of slippage, cut-to-length control during material inspection and use for counter calibration tasks. Measurement errors caused by slippage, vibration, dirt build up and day to day wear problems or damage to the material can be avoided. The sensors can be supplied for speeds from 0 m/min up to 4800 m/min and for temperatures up to 100 ° C.

Mondon optimises non-woven
production

Mondon presents SPUNLACE, a non-woven slitting and rewinding machine to inspect and/or slit rolls with production defects. With this machine, non-wovens from 200 to 900 mm width, weighing between 30 and 80 g/m˛, can be treated, and non-woven rolls with defects that had to be scrapped before, can now be reworked with Spunlace and can be sold as premium quality. The new machine consists of a powered unwinder with assisted loading of a parent roll; a shearing type slitting unit and a combined contact/centered automatic winding with assisted unloading.
Machine specifications:
•Working tension between 5 and 100 N/ m.
•The inlet and outlet rolls have a diameter of 1,300 mm
•Maximum number of cuts: 11
•Maximum speed: 300 m/min.

FAES presents differential winding with
1" rewinding shaft

In order to meet the increasing demand for rewinding reels with smaller core diameters, FAES Ltd offers its slitting and rewinding machines with the differential winding technique on 1“ rewinding shafts. The Swiss company has specialised in slitting and rewinding of sensitive foils, particularly in the field of thermo transfer and dye sublimation foils; and has long standing experience in handling small rewinding shafts. Rewinding shafts are used with radial differential windings from 25.4mm (1“) diameter and, in the case of axial differential winding, even from an 8mm diameter. The modular machine system is suitable for products of various materials – ranging from labels, smart labels and adhesive tapes, through to hot stamping foils.

Mink: Optimal smoothing and spreading
of web materials

Many companies are intensifying efforts to reduce the high costs of waste. The introduction of Mink web spreader rolls reduces waste to a minimum.

Brush strips are placed around a circumference to combat creasings. Bundles of bristles are angled outwards from the middle of the shaft. As the web makes contact with the bundles of bristles, there is a slight pushing of the bristles outwards caused by the web tension. The rotation of the Mink web spreader roll ensures a continuous repetition of this process, which results in a constant and effective stretching process.

There is a constant angle of spread across the whole length of the spreader roll, which allows an optimal spreading of the web, unlike traditional spreader rolls in rubber or the banana roller. Films as thin as 8 microns, web widths up to 4 meters and high web speeds are no problem for the Mink web spreader brush roll. Not only film webs but also textiles, cloth, rubber, paper and other web materials can be reliably spread and smoothed out.
